Who We Are
-
The fly reel market had solved for aesthetics and called it innovation. Every shelf had a row of beautiful, machined aluminum spools — clean, capable, and nearly identical. The drag systems hadn't meaningfully changed in decades. The click-and-pawl was still a spring and a ratchet. The disc drag was still a stack of washers.
For the beginner trying to feel their way through a fish run, there was no reel giving them real feedback at an accessible price. For the traveler who needed something light, reliable, and worth packing — the options were either too cheap to trust or too expensive to risk.
Nobody was building something new. So we did. Eight times.

VoloReel introduces a drag system built around two principles working in sequence. A magnetic pawl locks at four evenly spaced points per revolution — widely separated so each click is felt, not just heard. Between locks, conductive copper elements engage Lenz's law: as the spool accelerates, resistance builds automatically without any manual input. Just before the next magnetic lock engages, a brief release window lets the rod decompress and reset tension before the next hold.
The result is a reel that communicates. You don't just hear the fish running — you feel each phase of it: the lock, the brake, the breath, the lock again. It's a rhythm that tells the story of the fight in real time.
Built for 4–5 weight rigs. Designed to travel. Engineered through eight iterations until it earned the fish.
FAQs
How does the drag work — do I need to adjust it?
1
No manual adjustment needed during a fight. The Lenz's law drag system responds automatically to how fast the fish runs. The faster the spool spins, the more resistance the copper elements generate.
What line weight is it built for?
2
VoloReel is optimized for 4–5 weight setups — ideal for trout, panfish, and light freshwater fishing. It comes without line or backing. We recommend 50–60 yards of backing plus a 90 ft fly line.
What are the 4 clicks I'll feel?
3
The magnetic pawl engages 4 times per full spool revolution — each one a firm, distinct lock point. Between locks, the copper drag elements are active. Just before each lock re-engages, there's a brief micro-release that lets the rod relax and reset tension before the next hold. It's a rhythm, not a rattle.
Is it good for beginners?
4
It was designed with beginners in mind. The tactile feedback from 4 clear lock points per revolution tells you exactly what the fish is doing — something a standard click-pawl can't give you at this price. You'll feel the fight, not just hear it.
Is it durable enough to take on travel?
5
Yes. Familiar form factor, lightweight, and available in multiple colorways. It's built to go wherever you go .
